Experts of the U-LEAD with Europe Programme continue to compile selections of relevant grant opportunities for various fields in the conditions of the war.

Here is a digest of competitions and grants for municipal and media NGOs.

 

1. German Marshall Fund’s “Relief, Resilience, Recovery” grant programme. Current projects.

Priorities of the competition. Urgent needs of public activists and media professionals, as well as their families, including but not limited to:

• access to social, legal and psychological services;

• support for immediate/temporary relocation within Ukraine or to neighbouring countries (e.g. Moldova, Romania, Poland or other refugee-hosting countries), including assistance with transportation costs, temporary housing and seasonal equipment.

Who can participate? NGOs and independent media that are legally registered, located, relocated to and/or operate from Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

Grant amount: up to $25,000

Funding restrictions. Applications cannot cover food, construction/renovation or clothing costs. The share of expenses provided for in the budget to compensate the fees of members of the organisation’s team should not exceed 40%.

Project duration: 3-12 months.

2. Recovery and straightening of the capacities of NGOs: German Marshall Fund’s “Relief, Resilience, Recovery” grant programme

Priorities of the competition. Addressing the urgent needs of NGOs to enable them to operate and continue to provide assistance to their beneficiaries. Within this direction, the following types of activities are provided, including but not limited to:

• digital maintenance such as replacement and/or purchase of new equipment, recovery and/or development of data storage and data security systems;

• access to psychological support and treatment services for staff and volunteers;

• legal support for those who find themselves in abusive situations, including human trafficking, bribery, etc.;

• institutional support for reimbursement of wages to the main team, rent for office premises (temporary relocation or permanent office), utilities and communication services;

• emergency preparedness, including training on data protection, first aid and survival skills in war/conflict zones;

• development of capabilities and practices that can prevent digital and physical attacks against NGOs and media organisations located in Ukraine and abroad.

Who can participate? NGOs and independent media that are legally registered, located, relocated to and/or operate from Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

Grant amount: up to $25,000.

Funding restrictions. Applications cannot cover food, construction/renovation or clothing costs. The share of expenses provided for in the budget to compensate the fees of members of the organisation’s team should not exceed 40%.

3. Recovery and straightening of the capacities of NGOs in the liberated territories: German Marshall Fund’s “Relief, Resilience, Recovery” grant programme

Priorities of the competition. Addressing the urgent needs of NGOs to facilitate recovery of their operation and enable them to continue to provide support to their beneficiaries. Within this direction, the following types of activities are provided, including but not limited to:

• promoting the development and support of organisations and their beneficiaries in the liberated territories, including supporting the recovery of access to administrative and social services;

• supporting organisations working on establishing communication and coordination with state and local self-government bodies for the reintegration of liberated territories;

• supporting organisations of internally displaced persons and local residents of liberated territories, including with access to legal, social and psychological services;

• institutional support for reimbursement of wages to the main team, rent for office premises (temporary relocation or permanent office), utilities, communication services;

• supporting the implementation of formal and informal safety training, including on safety rules related to explosive remnants of war, in particular in the liberated territories.

Who can participate? NGOs and independent media that are legally registered, located, relocated to and/or operate from Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

Grant amount: up to $25,000.

Funding restrictions. Applications cannot cover food, construction/renovation or clothing costs. The share of expenses provided for in the budget to compensate the fees of members of the organisation’s team should not exceed 40%.

4. Media support: German Marshall Fund’s “Relief, Resilience, Recovery” grant programme

Priorities of the competition. Supporting the key role of the media, namely informing their audiences. Within this direction, the following types of activities are provided, including but not limited to:

• key support of urgent needs, including salary payments, temporary relocation expenses (rent, utilities), communication services and equipment, including laptops, cameras, microphones, etc.;

• supporting those who create media content with a variety of sources and formats of information reliability through on-the-spot reporting and fact-checking;

• monitoring and exposing malicious information actors, their narratives and methods of information dissemination;

• creating content aimed at diversifying the audiences and attracting new ones;

• development of recommendations to reduce the impact of fake news and misinformation;

• access to services for journalists, including psychological support, coaching, treatment and working through trauma;

• personal safety/survival skills training for journalists in war/conflict zones.

Who can participate? NGOs and independent media that are legally registered, located, relocated to and/or operate from Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

Grant amount: up to $25,000.

5. Support of educational projects, youth organisations and public initiatives for the recovery of Ukraine: German Marshall Fund’s “Relief, Resilience, Recovery” grant programme

Priorities of the competition. Supporting NGOs, including youth organisations, and recovery of their activities and support of their beneficiaries. Within this direction, the following types of activities are provided, including but not limited to:

• promoting the development and support of organisations that work on making and developing policies for shaping national memory and identity in the context of war and post-war recovery at the local and state levels;

• promoting the development and support of organisations, in particular youth organisations, that work on the development and implementation of policies and projects for the recovery of Ukraine, especially at local levels;

• strengthening the capacity of organisations that work and/or are involved in the development, implementation and monitoring of plans and projects for the recovery of Ukraine at the local, regional and/or national levels, as well as contribute to the coordination of these efforts between NGOs and state institutions.

Who can participate? NGOs and independent media that are legally registered, located, relocated to and/or operate from Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

Grant amount: up to $25,000.

6. Grant competition for NGOs working with IDPs and municipalities

Priorities of the competition:

  • creation or strengthening of partnerships involving CSOs and local authorities to solve local problems and address challenges of wartime;

  • measures promoting social integration and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons, including employment assistance, mentoring and psychological support;

  • development and implementation of effective models for the relaunching of relocated small and micro-businesses, including social entrepreneurship;

  • measures contributing to the involvement of IDPs and other vulnerable population groups in solving municipal problems;

  • conducting research and developing programmes and policies that will contribute to strengthening the capacities of local and displaced CSOs and host municipalities.

Who can participate? Charitable organisations (non-profit associations, institutions, foundations, etc.), non-governmental associations (NGOs, public associations) and other legal entities registered in Ukraine and having the status of a non-profit organisation.

Grant amount: UAH 400,000 to UAH 800,000.

Funding restrictions. Procurement, transportation and distribution of humanitarian aid (including food and non-food goods, medicinal products, etc.) and aid to the military are not supported.

Application deadline: 23 March 2023 (23:59).

Project duration: up to 6 months

7. Programmes of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives

Priorities of the competition:

  • maintaining stability and security, aimed at preventing conflicts and strengthening peace;

  • inclusive governance, respect for diversity and democracy, upholding human and minority rights and the rule of law;

  • promoting economic growth for all, including women’s economic rights, decent jobs and entrepreneurship, investing in the poorest and most vulnerable groups and ensuring economic stability;

  • gender equality and empowerment of women and girls;

  • human dignity, encompassing healthcare, education and nutrition;

  • environment and climate protection, focusing on mitigation of conflict-related consequences and elimination of adverse effects.

Who can participate?

  • local NGOs, public and non-profit organisations;

  • local educational institutions that plan to work on the project at the local level;

  • international, intergovernmental, multinational and regional organisations, institutions or agencies working on local development initiatives;

  • municipal, regional or national authorities or agencies working on local development projects.

Grant amount: CAD 30,000 to CAD 50,000

Application deadline: 30 April 2023 (23:59)

Project duration: until 28 February 2024

8. Support of civil society organisations in Ukraine

Priorities of the competition. Initiatives at local, regional and/or national levels that will ultimately strengthen the role of civil society in influencing state actors and authorities on issues related to human rights, equality, social inclusion, local governance and democratic participation. Projects under this lot should focus on issues of reducing inequality and challenges related to transparency, accountability and answerability of public actors and authorities, where the voices of diverse and vulnerable groups are taken into account in the democratic process.

Who can participate? Local active CSOs, newly created CSOs and grassroots CSOs.

Grant amount: up to £100,000.

Application deadline: 16 March 2023, 05:00 p.m. (Kyiv time).

Project duration: 3 to 10 months

9. Grant competition for organisational development

Priorities of the competition. Funds under this grant can be used to pay for the services of teachers, consultants, coaches or mentors. Services should be aimed at either strengthening basic organisational capacities or acquiring specific skills that allow CSOs to become more efficient, independent and viable.

Who can participate?

  • organisations legally registered in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Public Associations” or in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Charitable Activities and Charitable Organisations”;

  • organisations included in the Register of Non-Profit Organisations with an applicable non-profitability indicator (0032, 0034, 0036, 0038, 0048 only);

  • initiative groups of citizens that provide a proper justification of the need for their organisational development. In this case, the grant payment is made to the account of the organisation that meets the requirements described in points 1 and 2. This organisation must act as a patron of the initiative group and meet all the conditions of this Invitation.

Grant amount:

  • simple grant: up to $3,000;

  • grant for external evaluation: up to $1,000;

  • advanced grant: up to $10,000;

  • grant for a group of organisations: up to $10,000;

  • grant for an educational visit: up to $3,000;

  • grant for participation in educational events: up to $5,000;

  • grant for providers: up to $5,000.
